Tooth Extractions in Catoosa OK

At Dental Arts of Catoosa, OK, preserving the natural teeth of our patients is always a priority. Our team of doctors is highly trained in applying restorative procedures and preventative dental services, care and maintenance.

Unfortunately, despite the most diligent care and prevention, sometimes a tooth cannot be saved. In this case, an extraction is often the best option.

Extraction Procedures

Thanks to our advanced procedures, tooth extractions are relatively simple, safe, and typically result in an improved overall dental health and alleviation of tooth pain. The entire process will take no more than 20 minutes for a typical simple extraction.

After identifying the tooth to be removed, the extraction will proceed as follows:

    1. Our dentist will consult with the patient to determine any risk factors that may impact the procedure, including potential infections, health conditions or current medications that may cause complications or reduce healing.
    2. Once the patient is determined to be a suitable extraction candidate, our dentist will take x-rays to assess the full scope of the extraction and to identify the location of the nerves surrounding the tooth.
    3. To prepare the oral cavity for surgery, our dentist will apply a topical anesthetic, then inject a local anesthetic to numb the tooth and surrounding bone and tissue. After a few minutes, the area will be completely numb and the tooth can be safely extracted with minimal discomfort.
    4. Our dentist will use various instruments to extract the tooth with minimal damage to the surrounding tissue. During this process, the patient may feel some pressure as our dentist applies force to loosen and remove the tooth.
    5. Once the tooth has been removed, our dentist will administer care to the oral tissue, including gauze and rarely, suturing.

Conditions That Warrant Tooth Extraction

While no one wants to have teeth removed, there are a few conditions that warrant the procedure.  Tooth extractions are sometimes recommended for the following:

    Severe tooth decay/abscess or infection

    Impacted wisdom teeth

Crowding or blocking of new teeth

    Advanced gum disease

    Malformed or fractured teeth/trauma

    Orthodontia preparation

    Cosmetic purposes

Simple Extractions:

  • The tooth to be extracted is fully visible to our dentist, and the area can be prepared easily with local anesthesia.

  • Simple extractions cause minimal tissue damage and require minimal recovery.

Surgical Extractions:

  • The tooth to be extracted is not easily accessible (not yet erupted) or is broken under the gum.

  • A surgical procedure can be more complex, and may result in a prolonged healing time.

Post-Extraction Care

Before being discharged, patients will be advised on a number of potential side effects including infection, bleeding, bruising, swelling, and rarely, dry socket (exposed alveolar bone which results in delayed healing time and increased pain). For mild pain post-extraction, over-the-counter medications such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen may be advised, as well as a course of antibiotics to reduce the possibility of infection. Bleeding will typically subside within 24 hours, and a full recovery can be expected within about 10 days.

Patients will be advised of the following post-operative instructions:

Avoid smoking until full wound healing has occurred.

Avoid alcohol for 24 hours and avoid rinsing for 24 hours to prevent dislocation of the blood clot.

Avoid disturbing the wound with your toothbrush or tongue to preserve blood clot.

Maintain a soft food diet for two-three days and avoid chewing near the wound.

Avoid high-impact or intense physical activity for 24 hours.

While serious side effects are rare, patients should inform our office immediately if they experience any unusual or excessive symptoms in order to prevent further complications or delayed healing.
