Welcome to Dental Arts! Our team, led by Dr. Soren Michaelsen, is dedicated to providing compassionate and comprehensive dental care in OK. If you're considering dental implants but need additional support in your upper teeth, a sinus lift may be the best option for you. Here's everything you need to know about the procedure.
What is a Sinus Lift?
The sinus lift procedure, also known as sinus augmentation, involves a surgical process that aims to increase the amount of bone in the upper jaw. The surgery is intended to add more bone to support molars and premolars to the jawbone. This is done by lifting the sinus membrane and inserting a bone graft into the newly created space.
Why Would You Need a Sinus Lift?
Insufficient Bone Density for Implants:
Implant Stability: Dental implant stability requires a minimum of bone to be integrated and function properly. The implants may only be anchored properly if the upper jaw has enough bone height.
Bone Resorption Over Time: The jawbone, particularly after tooth loss, can naturally resorb over time. This reduces the amount of bone available for implant placement.
Bone Loss Due to Periodontal Disease or Tooth Extraction:
Gum Disease: Advanced periodontitis can cause significant bone loss surrounding the teeth. When teeth are extracted or lost due to periodontal diseases, bone resorption can be accelerated in the upper jaw.
Bone Loss After Tooth Extraction: The jawbone can shrink or deteriorate following tooth removal, especially in the premolar and molar areas.
Maxillary Sinus Anatomically Positioned:
Position of the Low Sinus: In some people, the maxillary sinus may extend into the jawbone region, leaving no space for dental implants.
Sinus Pneumatization: As we age, or after tooth removal, the maxillary sinus can expand and reduce the height of the bone.
Trauma or Injury:
Bone augmentation may be required in cases of significant bone loss due to trauma or accidents to the upper jaw.
Congenital Anomalies:
Some people are born with a smaller upper jawbone. They may need a sinus lift to increase the bone height enough for dental implant placement.
Cosmetic and Restorative Needs:
Full-Arch Rehab: Sufficient bone height is required to achieve the best possible results for patients who need full-arch implants or dentures supported by implants.
Improved Aesthetics of the Face: A sinus lift can provide a youthful appearance by increasing bone height and improving facial aesthetics.

"Dr. Michaelsen was awesome. He took out my tooth put in the implant along with a temporary that looks great!. He walked me through pretty much everything he was doing kept asking if I was ok. The assistant was great to Definitely kept me entertained and took my situation very seriously and even helped me relax by letting me know she has had the same thing done and that we can compare when mine is officially done. Julie helped me in financing everything and was absolutely great at helping me get the payments low enough to afford. It was definitely the best experience I have ever had. I even woke up and I hardly feel a thing it's more sore where they stuck the needles to numb me than anything."

The Sinus Lift Procedure
Dental Arts Dr. Michaelsen and his team follow a process that is meticulous to ensure the safety and success of a sinus lift:
- Assessment and Planning: Dr. Michaelsen uses advanced imaging to evaluate your sinus anatomy and bone structure and plan the procedure.
- Anesthesia: Local anesthesia is administered for your comfort. If desired, sedation options are also available.
- Surgical Access: A small incision is made to expose the bone, and then a small opening is created in it.
- Sinus Membrane Lift: Gently lifting the sinus membrane creates space for a bone graft.
- Bone Grafting: A bone graft fills in the newly formed space and encourages new bone growth.
- Closure:
The gum tissues are sutured into place, and healing begins.
Recovery and Aftercare
To ensure a successful recovery, it's important to carefully follow your post-operative care plan and attend all follow-up appointments to track your progress.
