Why Do People Need Dentures?

About 15% of those who do not have teeth get dentures each year. There are many reasons that individuals may choose to get dentures. Dentures are one option to replace all of an individual’s teeth. Read on to learn more about dentures.

Types of dentures

The two main types of dentures are fixed and removable dentures. The removable dentures can be taken out for cleaning and during the night. Usually, suction, adhesives or a combination of the two hold the dentures in the wearer’s mouth during the day. These dentures may need maintenance as the wearer’s mouth changes. Many denture wearers find that these types of dentures need to be adjusted by a dentist every three to five years.

Fixed dentures are held in place through dental implants. The implants are placed in the jawbone and the bone fuses with the implants. The implants have attachments on them that can be used to hold the dentures in place. The metal implants can also help prevent bone loss in the jawbone, so these dentures are more likely to fit for a longer amount of time.

Benefits of dentures

After an individual has lost teeth, the face can begin to sag in. When there are no teeth to support the cheeks, the face can tend to have a hollow appearance. This leads to an older appearance for an individual.

Dentures can also help individuals speak better. It can be difficult to properly form words without the support of the teeth. Finally, one of the most important reasons why individuals choose dentures is that it allows individuals to eat a wider range of foods that would not have been otherwise possible.

Will everyone need dentures?

Whether or not a patient will need dentures during their life depends on a variety of factors. Some people lose teeth from disease, such as diabetes, while other people simply do not have strong teeth that will last a lifetime. In some cases, teeth may be damaged from an injury or accident.

However, sometimes, people choose dentures because of tooth loss from gum disease or extensive tooth decay. Both of these conditions are entirely preventable with the right care. Patients should brush their teeth twice a day and floss each evening.

Visiting a dentist regularly can help the patient get any remaining plaque removed from the teeth. A dentist can also catch problems such as decay or gum disease early when these problems are most treatable. With the right care, a patient’s teeth can last a lifetime.

Visit a dentist today

Whether you are considering getting dentures, already have them or are simply curious, it is important to visit a dentist regularly. If you have missing teeth, a dentist can help you determine if dentures are right for you and what type would be right. If you do not yet have missing teeth, visiting a dentist regularly can help you keep the teeth that you do have.
